Berkhamsted Cricket Club 1st XI v Ampthill Town II on Sat 30 Jun 2012 at 1.00pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won By 5 wickets

Match report Amptill Town 2nd XI vs Berkhamsted proved to be an enthralling game for the generous crowd gathered on the deck last Saturday afternoon.

With the captain on holiday eating sub-standard food, James Wyatt stepped in to lead the ever improving Berkhamsted to a second league victory.

In winning the toss Berkhamsted had the potential to repeat the winning formula discovered at Bayford. The opposition were put in on a deck that was only going to dry out throughout the day, making chasing that bit easier.

The warm up resembled something seen at U9 level thus leaving Berkhamsted suitably prepared for long day in the field…..

Josh and Joe opened up the game with tight spells, restricting the opposition openers to few early runs.

The first change saw Steed and Joyce produce some erratic lines, however, runs still never came too freely and Amptill plodded along to 50 for 1 off 20 overs.

Gus and Hugh were then introduced to try part the established Amptill batsmen. However, at around 100 for 2 off 30 overs, any energy in the field was sapped away and consequently, the Berkhamsted CC 1st XI Drop Catch book re-opened.

8 was the number this week.

Ex-County keeper James had trouble with the gloves.

Steed and Holderness had issues with the tree line in the deep.

Atkins with the cloud cover.

Then lastly Joyce with the Clubhouse.

It cost us dearly in the latter overs of the innings as runs were scored to all parts of the ground. Amptill finished on a competitive 233 off 53 overs, which was testament to the application of a traditional batting approach - building long partnerships and keeping wickets in hand for a blast at the end.

233 however, wasn’t a total that phased Berkhamsted. Previous scores of 260 and 280, meant we were positive over lunch about chasing successfully.

Herring and Joyce opened, and left soon after. Gus had a good start but holed out to midwicket for 24. So, at 40 for 3 Amptill felt they had the game in the bag.

Will Steed and Captain James had other ideas. A collection of timely cover drives and nibbles down to third man saw Berkhamsted reach 170 for 3 – a remarkable effort underlined by maturity and understanding of the situation.

The total was eventually reached with 44 overs down involving Jez Oneill supporting Steed to the end.

A nice point to note….Steed finishing the game fittingly with a gigantic six over the trees onto the school fields and stating ‘I’ve hit bigger’ – We look forward to more of them in the games to come Will!

Next game Langleybury 2XI at home – Come and watch the Berko hopefully record another fine victory.
