Berkhamsted Cricket Club 4th XI v Knebworth Park VI on Sat 30 Jun 2012 at 1pm

Match report Our team selection policy for the 4s has entered a new phase of either hijacking people at Berko station or loitering around Kidzone looking for the new Under 5 Bradman. Consequently, the skippers team talk before the game consisted of a set of introductions rather than instructions. This was also a line up where the opposition could be forgiven for thinking they were playing the wrong sport as we welcomed the return from the Baltic wastes of P Drury and the return from happy retirement of T Francis (Tony not Trevor, the latter would have been injured).

Mark lost the toss again and randomly picked batters in a conventional 1-11 format. After 4 balls our no 4 Peps was sauntering to the crease and dropping anchor for what would be a monumentally patient knock. With oppo bowler Mantle bowling a beautiful line and length we were soon in a shocking branston at 17-5 and when new boy Adam decided to wander out of his crease for the second time it was 28-6. Out came OC to join Peps and the scoreboard started to tick but when Oli went for 22 we still only had 58 on the board and Peps had scored 6 not out in 25 overs! Guy came in for his first knock of the season and rather disappointingly displayed his new shot, a conventional forward prod which has replaced his wondrously innovative box drive to square leg. Guy mashed one towards cow only to see a young gun pluck it out of the sky and we were 72-8. With Peps virtually on his last legs Mark emerged at no 10 to hit six 4s and a Pruntyesque 6 over midwicket to set a reasonable target of 134 off 44 overs.

Knebworth have posted some low scores recently and when Rajib started tearing into them it looked like another rout was on the cards however they had a secret weapon in 12 year old Angus Laws Mather who played one of the best innings seen on the top square from a colt. Timing the ball sweetly from the start he saw off Rajib and then never looked in trouble until skying one off Rob. Despite trying several bowling variations we never quite looked like winning the game and with a late flurry of boundaries the opposition almost sneaked home. A couple of tough chances went down and an easy run out went begging but in fairness the opposition didnt deserve to lose and honours were even.

Already looking forward to next weekend and the realistic prospect of John Motson opening the bowling.
