Wormley II v Berkhamsted Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 19 May 2012 at 1pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won by 17 runs
Match report
A very hard earned win on the road for the 2s. Locum skipper Mark won the toss and decided to bat on a pitch that looked better than it played, with the odd ball popping off a length and generally low bounce.
Despite a fluent start from Gareth, we gradually got pinned down against tidy bowling from the home team and we were never going at much better than 3 an over. Andre played through the pain barrier - dodgy thumb, attempted run out throw in the back and then classy forward defensive shot with his lip - to make 48 in about as many overs and it proved invaluable as the only other significant contributions came from Huw and Hamish who both played well.
Tea was taken - excellent apart from the burnt pizza - and out we went with the Chelsea fans keen to wrap it up quickly to get back for their night with destiny. Wormley had other ideas though and full credit to them they pushed hard for the win with Stockley in particular launching a few big blows over cow. With Huw constantly beating the bat with no luck Mark switched to spin twin Romit who removed the dangerman and then proceeded to pick up a five-fer with Hamish bowling unplayable legcutters at the other end. Just as it looked like Wormley might hang on for a draw a mid-pitch mix up ended the game with a simple run out. Special mention to Luke Frey for a dynamic fielding display with one incredible stop on the boundary like Gordon Banks in his pomp.
Many thanks to our hosts Wormley who were both courteous and friendly throughout the whole match.
