Potten End v Berkhamsted Cricket Club Under 11 Pairs on Tue 03 May 2011 at 6pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won BCC won by 1 run
Match report
A fine start to the U11Bs campaign with a win in a close encounter with a well matched Potten End side. Potten End batted first and were soon under pressure as Peachey and Pierleoni bowled some good line and length to restrict the home side to 200 for 2 after 4 overs with Peachey picking up two wickets. Some further good bowling had Potten End in more trouble as McLaughlin picked up another wicket and at the halfway stage the total stood at just 211 for 3. Then followed an amazing 4 overs when BCC gave away just 6 runs in total with 3 maiden overs in a row courtesy of Newton, Pierleoni and Cooper.
Potten End then produced their strongest pair and BCC did well to stem the onslaught, although should have kept their heads when a golden opportunity to run out the Potten End top scorer was missed! Nevertheless a final total of 249 for 4 seemed well within BCC’s grasp.
The BCC innings however didn’t get off to the start they needed as a wicket first ball put them on the back foot. But Cooper and Biddle knuckled down and began to take some quick singles to get the scoreboard ticking ending their partnership with the score at 215 for 2. McLaughlin and Devey then put on a further 13 runs and at that stage BCC were in control. Unfortunately some very accurate bowling produced 3 quick wickets for Potten End leaving BCC some 22 runs short of victory with 4 overs to go. Rees and Pierleoni took 11 off their first over before another wicket in the 14th over undid some of their good work. A maiden over followed which meant BCC needed 12 runs to win off the last over. Two glorious boundaries from Pierleoni and some good running between the wickets brought the scores level with one ball remaining. A delicate jab to mid-wicket and a scamper down the wicket saw BCC home. Perfectly judged boys! Well done.
The game was played in a great spirit and with very welcome mugs of warm tea provided by Potten End in what turned out to be a cold evening. That said, nothing warms you up quite like coming out on the right side of close game.
Roll on Tring next week!
