Tring Park B v Berkhamsted Cricket Club Under 12C on Tue 24 May 2011 at 6pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Lost by 37 runs
Match report
The boys put on a sterling performance last night against Tring but unfortunately we fell short of the runs needed. What with exams this week and some of the boys helping out with the U13s we only managed to field eight players - it didn't matter too much when we bowled (as Tring kindly lent us a couple of players!) but we lost out at the crease despite some brave performances and a fantastic knock from Calum who gave the B team their first "retired not out" of the season - well done Calum!
I'm not quite sure who won the toss (the boys sorted it out themselves without me knowing too much about it!) but we bowled first and made a great start in the first few overs, pinning their batsmen back and keeping the run rate down well. We took a steady stream of wicket throughout the innings, with Ben, Charlie, Zac and the two Williams getting one each - very evenly spread! Some good, alert fielding from all of the boys, including Jack in his first match. We put some tidy overs in with Ben and Charlie doing very well in leading the attack, Charlie for me being the pick of the bowlers with a very consistent and accurate spell including a fine wicket clipping the corner of the off stump. Unfortunately for us one of the Tring batsmen started to get his eye in midway through the innings and stroked a few fours before retiring not out. That left us with a bit a mountain to climb with only
8 batsmen.
Still, the boys were up for the challenge and we started keenly with Ben and Charlie at the crease. Despite some good defensive work they come unstuck at the hands of the Tring attack and we lost some early wickets, including Robbie, run out after an optimistic shout (we knew we had to be aggressive in the run chase so a bit unlucky with this one). After this, William S and Calum settled down into a great partnership, Calum racking up the runs with a succession of imperious boundaries and William helping out with some good calling for quick singles (the odd one a bit too quick!). Following Calum's retirement we struggled to keep the run rate going but we battled on with Zac, William D and Jack all stepping up to try and make a game of it.
Unfortunately it wasn't to be but we gave a very good account of ourselves - well done boys!
