Berkhamsted Cricket Club Under 12C v Hemel Boys on Tue 10 May 2011 at 6pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won by 7 runs
Match report
The boys put on a great perfomance last night to seal a well deserved victory against Hemel Boys. The teams were fairly evenly matched but we just came out on top thanks to a good solid batting display and some tight bowling, especially towards the end of the Hemel innings when things were starting to get pretty close, I think by then there was a fair amount of fingernail biting going on amongst the watching parents!
We won the toss and captain Charlie decided to bat first to try and put a decent target up on the board. I'm pleased to say that, as I've tried to encourage them in the last couple of matches, the boys were much more positive and decisive about their running, looking for quick singles where possible. William and Charlie made a steady start for five overs or so, with Callum stepping up after William was bowled out for 4. This pair took to the task with earnest and started pushing along the scoreline with relish - some really good, decisive run calls by both batsmen. Callum was eventually bowled for 25, including two 4s. Not to be out-done, Charlie bravely lasted out to the end of the innings (for a score of 23), being aided by a fine knock of 8 from Ben and a cameo appearance from Zac facing one of the last balls.
At the turnaround I asked the boys to try and be really tight on their bowling, not to give away cheap runs; with a total of 81 on the board we felt we were definitely in with a shout. We bowled consistently well through out the innings, picking up a steady stream of wickets; William S getting a great catch for the first wicket and adding to it a few overs later with a c&b. Ben and Zac each took clean wickets, with the remaining two wickets coming from sharp throws in the field - first Eddie with what ended up as a stumping then Callum with a great throw into Robbie with the gloves. We still need to improve a little on field positions and reducing the number of errors but overall I was very pleased with how they all performed. The last few overs were a bit of a tense affair and all credit to the last few bowlers, Ben, Zac, Dom and Seb, who kept their cool and managed to produce some great quality bowling when it really mattered.
I think the boys learnt a lot from this performance and hopefully they can now settle down into some consistent form. Usual thanks to the scorers, this time round Julie and Catherine, and thanks too for all the vocal support - I think this really did help the boys in believing that they could do it.
