Berkhamsted Cricket Club Under 13A v Langleybury on Mon 02 May 2011 at 5pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won by 4 wickets
Match report
Berkhamsted and Langleybury began their league campaign with a gripping match that had spectators on the edge of their seats all evening. The home team came out on top, but only after negotiating some very tricky periods against a strong Langleybury team who made it to Finals Day last year.
Having put the visitors into bat on a sunny but bitterly cold evening, Berkhamsted struck early, taking the key wicket of Ball, bowled by Ormerod, who went on to produce an exceptional spell of four overs for just five runs.
Pacy, accurate bowling by Holdroyd and Stanford meant the visitors struggled to get into a rhythm and by the halfway point in the innings they’d been restricted to 30 for 2. The next ten overs, though, were a different story, with Roe and King (both ret 30 not out) playing superbly and taking advantage of some sloppy fielding and loose bowling to get Langleybury right back in the game.
Lloyd's quickfire cameo (13 no) helped get his side to the 100 mark for the loss of 5 wickets. Ormerod bowled a wicket maiden in the final over, while Stanford, Mack and Lewarne – with the help of a good catch from stand-in keeper Nicholls - picked up the other wickets.
With a target of 101, Berkhamsted got off to an awful start, losing opener Nicholls (run out) and Holdroyd to a corker of a ball from Lloyd who, along with Ball, had the top order batsmen under the cosh in the early stages.
Stanford (ret 32 not out) and Mack (10) survived to steady the ship with a combination of sensible defence and aggressive hitting, but Mack’s dismissal (lbw to Lloyd) sparked a middle order collapse as Roe picked up two quick wickets in the first over of an impressive spell.
With the score on 46-5 after 8 overs, the match had swung back the way of the visitors, but a dogged innings of 29 not out from Steed on debut (with good support from captain Lewarne) put Berkhamsted back on track. The partnership proved crucial and was finally ended with Lewarne run out superbly by Lloyd with the home team just a handful of runs short of the target. Butler-Caddle survived some tense moments to hit the winning boundary that gave Berkhamsted the win with three overs to spare.
Overall, a really enjoyable match that was in the balance all evening. The teams meet again next month in the return fixture.
