Hatfield Crusaders III v Berkhamsted Cricket Club 4th XI on Sat 03 Sep 2011 at 1pm
Match was Drawn

Match report We went into our final game needing a good performance to retain our Div 12 place. We arrived at Datchworth pleased to see that the pitch that put our skipper in A&E 2 years ago had been moved to another field in a prettier setting. Mark won the toss and decided to bat - Andre was dropped first ball and Ethan rode his luck but gradually both began to assert themselves on a fast outfield. Ethan hit some majestic drives and the 100 partnership came up in the 28th over quickly followed by Ethans first senior 50, an excellent effort. After Andre departed Steve came in and looked to run the opposition ragged but unfortunately he holed out to midwicket. Julian upped the scoring rate with some thumps over the top and we soon arrived at max batting points. Thereafter we tried to scamper some mad singles resulting in a couple of run outs but a score of 198 represented a good total on a pitch with variable bounce.

Tea was undoubtedly the best of the summer with both dodderers and kids alike delighted with the hot sausages, chips, pate and lots of cakes. Our youthful attack went to work and Ethan and Jack picked up early wickets. We hoped that Hatfield wouldn't bat deep but that didnt prove to be the case and winkling out the batsmen proved difficult especially with a couple of LBW shouts being rejected on frankly bizarre grounds. Steve pulled off an amazing run out and Jacob an easier one, Phil and Jacob bowled tidy spells without much luck and so it was left to the spinners to complete the job - alas it wasnt to be and with 3 catches going down the opposition put up the shutters once they realised they had secured enough bonus points to stay up, the match petering out to a draw.

We had a few anxious moments in the dressing room before we found out that Southgate had lost and we had stayed up and then it was back to Berko for several celebratory pints and the best amateur haka you will ever see by James Holliday and his pretend Maoris (could be a great name for a band). Congratulations to OC on his well deserved player of the year award.
