Match report
Despite the result this was an enjoyable game played in the right spirit by both teams and the game could easily have gone in our favour. Returning skipper PW won the toss and inserted Hemel, although remind me never to go to a casino with Joe and Rajib, the unlucky twins. Bowling great line and length they must have beaten the bat 15 times in the first 10 overs. However we glanced up at the scoreboard and they were 50-0 - not helped by having 10 men with Shakeel AWOL. Guy helped out for a while and Jacob was called from the sofa to bowl a great spell but the saviour again was OC, who wheeled away for 15 overs and grabbed a five-for including 4 clean bowled - Joe and Rajib take note! Undoubted champagne moment was a Joe Atkins catch at square leg - sensational. We had them 100-8 and an early tea beckoned but then 4 dropped catches in quick succession (none of them easy) allowed veteran Ratcliffe to prosper before we wrapped up the innings. These runs were to prove crucial.
After tea Hemel opened up with 2 spinners and runs were hard to come by. Andre went cheaply but Rajib struck 5 boundaries before departing for his night shift. Thereafter our downfall was the short ball as 3 batsmen tried the pull shot only to give their young keeper catching practice. The skipper played well and top scored, only for he and Peter D to fall in the space of 3 balls. The 2 Oli's batted in the rain but soon got out and suddenly we were in dire trouble needing 45 with 2 wickets left and not many overs. Joe and Mark adopted a push and run approach and runs started to flow as the opposition began to worry. It was looking good then Joe played round a straight one. 28 to win with 1 wicket and 6 overs left - could it be a father and son triumph with Mark and Jacob at the crease. Lewarne junior looked in no trouble and with 3 overs to go only 13 were needed when Mark got a tiny edge, the keeper snaffled it and it was all over.
