Old Owens III v Berkhamsted Cricket Club 4th XI on Sat 18 Jun 2011 at 1pm
Match was Abandoned Rain
Match report
Its a hard rain a gonna fall. We travelled more in hope than expectation to Potters Bar with dark rainclouds gathering all around us. Joseph and Guy were kidnapped at the club when 2 players didnt show and it got worse at the ground when Tom turned up for the game with 11 changed. Embarrasment and apologies followed and Tom went home to put his feet up.
We lost the toss and the skipper and Pete D went out to bat. The batting was... circumspect, perhaps more Hinge and Brackett than Greenidge and Haynes and after 10 overs we had motored to a symmetric 10. Worse still, we had lost both openers and when Julian, Joseph and Mark went for not many it was left to James Westley to salvage the innings and in partnership with OC the horrid hieorglyphics-type scoreboard started to rotate. Ollie was in particularly good form peppering the boundaries on all sides and after James had gone for a patient 32 he was joined by an unlikely partner-in-crime - Guy "dog whisperer" Lewis - who after trying to play with his box for a few overs proceeded to build a 50 partnership that took us to 8 batting points.
Miraculously, in all this time, it hadnt rained and we went into a very pleasant tea looking forward to bowling. When we emerged someone had turned out the lights and after we had bowled 9 balls the heavens opened and we sprinted for safety - all except Oli Buchanan who showed the true spirit of cricket by helping the Old Owens groundsman cover the wicket with a huge sheet of tarpaulin as the rain fell in biblical quantities. The rest of us watched. 30 minutes later, with water lying all over the outfield, that was that for another week.
