Match report Berkhamsted III’s vs Harpenden Dolphins 3rd September 2011

An early start not appreciated by some of the team. Toss won and elected to bat first. Playing on seemed the most popular method of dismissal. Mark was looking good until he attempted this. Tim got going and looked bemused when given the finger. The ball went past, allegedly deflected and made a noise, the keeper dropped it, Mark gave him out as a back foot plumb LBW and Tim questioned the fact that to his comprehension the L inferred it has to hit your pad. Without the benefit of TV replays we will never know – at least they bought each other a pint later. Their gully made the mistake of watching Puds play a shot and saying “the tail has started…” A different tale at the end with Puds 74 not out and our total 220-4. Suds played his best knock of the season, very straight and kept rotating the strike which worked well. Goughie had to keep a watchful eye on their scorer who had all the gear but no idea. Their book looked like Jason’s technicolour dream coat but didn’t add up – the assumption was made the lad was colour-blind. Despite Ali’s special offer at Chav-city buying a bat and getting one free he didn’t need either and Jack missed out on a knock too.

Excellent tea as expected. The I’s had taken the liberty of already finishing their game although not successfully. Suds and Ezzy opened the bowling; Puds took a good catch at first slip of Suds. Especially bearing in mind he was having a bit of a hot flush having, for reasons best known to him, smeared deep heat on his chestnuts. He asked why Mark wasn’t having the same problem which was quite obvious as Mark hadn’t rubbed it over his. Roasted chestnuts didn’t help Puds hold the next one. After 4 consecutive maidens Ezzy was bored and Goughie came on and Mark stumped their other opener. Dan appeared to run-out their number 3 as the bat was not grounded but it was hard for their umpire to see from where he was standing and looking, he’d already missed a short run. Apart from the golf shots there was some additional irony for this number 3. Basically he didn’t look much good. After an ugly cross-batted swipe over mid-wicket he was a bit slow to start off on a run. He then apologised and said “I was too busy admiring my shot!” It was commented wryly “let’s hope if he ever plays a decent straight batted shot it goes for four, otherwise he is going to be run-out by a good 19-20 yards.” Then later an uppish drive didn’t quite carry to Suds at mid-off who ran him out backing up at the bowlers end.

They seemed to miss out going for the runs early enough; 75-3 off 26 overs, 87-3 off 30, 116-3 off 35 and then it seemed it dawned on them with on guy on 50 to actually try scoring 105 runs off 12 overs. Although they had a few big overs they never looked that likely to pull it off. There were a lot of edges and chipped balls landing near fielders but alas we didn’t get enough wickets to get us in contention to win. Dan put in a good spell somewhat unfairly called for 2 no-balls, one as his heel lifted off the line (!) and one for an over-waist high beamer! The highlight was when he told Charlie to get the field sorted out. He took a good catch at cow-corner of their number 6 who was scoring quickly. They finally got to 205 for 7 probably like us rueing the fact they didn’t start going for it a bit earlier. In the grand scale of things the match didn’t matter – I think if the positions were reversed we would have preferred to have lost going for it.

The season ended. We were 13th with 267 points, the spread being 378 for promotion and 210 for relegation. Not a great season and a struggle to get a core team going. Ian Merritt contributed well all round early season before joining the II’s. Puds scored well ending with 411 runs averaging 46 including a ton, Ed put on a memorable 114 and ended second highest scored with an average of 47. Andre scored a 95! Bowling wise Goughie ended with 21 wickets averaging 25 and economy of 3.9 below par for him, Suds next most with 9 wickets in half as many games. Probably the best spell of the season was Ezzy taking the top four for 12 runs against Bovington which certainly won us that game. With this season’s availability problems and both the I’s and II’s getting relegated we’ll happily take our final position. It has also been great to see the younger talent coming through. Prize for the season a toss-up between Puds and Goughie who pipped it for playing away games, on waterlogged pitches and for writing these match reports. Thanks to Charlie for all his contributions again this season and to the 44 plus people who played.
