Berkhamsted Cricket Club Lost by 106 runs

Match report Berkhamsted III’s vs Old Camdenians II 27th August 2011

Quite an age gap with over 40’s and under 16’s and only Suds in the middle with 3 weeks to join the old timers. Won the toss put them in. Their opener, who was a nice bloke, put on 50 out of 60 and moved up to scoring 77 out of 100. He was merciless with anything getting to him on the full smacking it for 4 or 6. The rest got them up to 165 in 51.1 overs but it is fair to say the rest of their batting looked a bit weak. Our ground fielding was good but we dropped 3 catches of varying importance, the first one of their opener early on being the costly one. Jack bowled well when he kept it pitched up and Casey had a very good spell. Puds took two catches at first slip. One of their guys was out twice to the same ball, caught behind and stumped. Most of the afternoon was slow rotation of slow left handers.

Excellent tea as always at home and pleasing to see we managed to beat Ireland in Dublin as our last warm-up game for the rugby World Cup. Forty-eight overs to knock off 165 looked quite doable. Dan and Suds opened with Suds departing in the second over. Mark knocked a few around and then pulled out of a drive to chip one back to the football boot wearing bowler. Good experience for Dan to open, he will learn it is a long game, to ignore the chirp and concentrate on hanging around as the runs will come if you are still there. Apart from Puds whacking a few including a straight six into the field the batting was somewhat uninspiring. Our hopes were left on Ed but he was bowled a beauty too early on and that was pretty much it. The conclusion was they were a better bowling team than batting team as their bowlers didn’t bowl any bad balls and could do enough with it to make life tricky. Meanwhile we watched Alex score 70-odd runs for the twos wishing we had his contribution to make more of a game of ours. Disappointing to be thrashed by a team we bowled out for a fair score but the story of the season losing does seem to be a habit.
