Bovingdon v Berkhamsted Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 23 Jul 2011 at 1pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won by 42 runs
Match report
We were delighted to see the return of Ali - with sparkling new boots and with Ezzie reaching for his wallet of a jug to celebrate Ali's re-introduction to the beautiful game. Saturday was at last set fair weather wise, although the pitch was very soft after heavy over night rain. Second from top plays bottom of the league - and we were away - and didn't the youngsters from Bovingdon know it.
Charles tossed, lost and we were inserted. Toddy and Mark got us off to a very solid start in tricky conditions with any loose delivery being punished - but despite our openers' excellent start, it was never an easy track to bat on. Toddy fell to a tickle behind and Mark leaving one which just straightened to take top of off. Buckley was in the groove hitting hard and straight. It was a day for the front foot to be going down the track to negate low bounce. Shame the author did not take note, being bowled to a short one that kept low. Lots of umpiring for him!
Puddles joined Tim. "Go on, old man, get a few to make a game of it" was the comment from one of the oppo. Tim and Puddles duly obliged to make some good runs, Tim hitting straight; Puddles pulling. Tim was out hitting one early that stuck in the soft pitch; Puddles to another LBW from the home umps. Ethan and Ian then added a good few more important runs and made batting look a lot easier. Charlie then obliged with a few lusty blows before our two number of 11s battled it out for the glory of the number 10 spot; Goughy scoring twice as fast as Ezzie with a fine 2. 149 all out - something to bowl at, when we all agreed 180 would have been a good total.
After a fine tea, most of which Buckley seemed to have had, and advice to Toddy regarding the joys of parenting, Charlie drew us back to the game at hand. We knew we needed to take 10 wickets to win. Having taking soundings, Charlie called for the old ball and the older Ezzie to open with Sudders from the other end. What an inspired piece of captaincy it proved to be. Our all out non-pace attack had them bamboozled. Ezzie was on fire. He got both openers in quick succession. Enter Bovindon's number 4. Their blond haired left hander who had hit the ball very cleanly last year against us. After a lucky start, he enjoyed one of Sudders' overs for 18. He was clearly finding his groove and if he stayed in for 5 or so more overs, we knew he could take the game away from us. Having had a couple of LBWs turned down, Ezzie struck again with their no. three caught plumb in-front. He then had 4! Clean bowling the left hander with a beauty. We could now smell victory.
Goughie then came into the attack, with Sudders very coolly taking a skier which was behind him. And so it continued - with more tight bowling and sharp catching; Buckley taking a fine close reaction catch off Goughie. However, the highlight of the day was to watch young Ethan bowl with the new ball. We still had only relatively few runs to play with. We needed to keep it tight and Ethan duly obliged. He kept in controlled at first and then started to crank it up. By golly, he generate some pace - he had the batsmen jumping to the square leg umpire, hit on the thigh, but always keeping the ball up. He is surely an excellent prospect and could have had more than the 2 wickets he took. With a run out to finish them off, we won with over 40 runs in the bank. It was all a little quieter in the Bovingdon ranks as we walked off.
