Berkhamsted Cricket Club Under 9 Red v Radlett on Mon 12 Jul 2010 at
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won BCC won by 14 runs
Match report
Onwards & Upwards to Finals Day for the Under 9's!
A Close Encounter of the weird kind saw our young guns home last night, with the match turning one way and then another before we finally overcame an enthusiastic Radlett Side.
Really, we ought to have won this game more easily than we eventually did - with cup fever surely affecting our normal smooth performance! Captain for the day Tom M won the toss and rightly decided to bat. As normal Tom L and Joe D gave us a very solid start against some ordinary bowling and we were 229 for no wickets after 4 overs, but then the wheels came off a little and we went into struggle mode with Charlie and Harry E doing their best but getting no luck against an improved Radlett attack.
James W and Tom M then hit a few fours but our wickets kept falling and by the time our third pair left the field, we were at 250-odd and with a little work to do (& that despite 3 boundaries from James and 1 from Tom).
Alfie and Nathan came out for the last four overs and I guess we all needed then to deliver for the team - & they did! Alfie top scored for the Under 9's with sensible and aggressive batting (finding the boundary and running numerous two's very hard with Nathan) whilst Nathan played the innings we really needed - which was sensible and careful - playing the good ball straight and ensuring that quick singles were taken. So, no more wickets fell and we kind of stumbled to 276 for 5..... maybe not enough on a hard & fast wicket?
But then we bowled very well. Alfie just missed out on a great hat-trick and conceded just 1 run in his spell & Nathan kept it equally tight at the other end & we had Radlett in negative territory after the opening 4 overs! Great start.
James and Tom M then kept Radlett below 200 after 8 overs with Tom taking an amazing 5 wickets in a great spell of bowling backed up by some great BCC fielding - we will all remember the catches from James, the run out from Alfie and the all round diligence of the side in the field for a long time.
Charlie and Harry suffered a little as the Radlett boys get their game together but by the time that Joe D and Tom L picked up the ball for the last 4 overs, Radlett looked almost beaten....
But to be fair to Radlett,, they then produced a good spell of batting and got their score to a respectable 262 for 8 - closer than it should have been!
So, Finals Day next for the guys!
