Berkhamsted Cricket Club 3rd XI v Chorleywood III on Sat 21 Aug 2010 at 13:00
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won by 7 wickets with 7 overs spare
Match report
The calendar stated that it was mid August but the weather was distinctly October. Comparisons were made with such sunspots as Fleetwood, Cleethorpes and other northern outposts.
Charles shuffled off to the middle and advised us later that it was an extra high toss. For reasons known only to the opposing captain, they won the toss and decided to bat on a wicket that was a bit damp but given the persistent drizzle was getting damper by the minute. The sky was leaden when we commenced and Puds was predicting that at 3.59 the heavens would open and we would retire to the bar. He is a far better groundsman than weather forecaster.
Chris Stone hurtled in from the top end and despite a range of full tosses and slightly too short deliveries, bowled reasonably well and a very fine delivery had the opener back to the shed in short order.
We were then forced to battle through a decent partnership broken by the wily Ezard who bowled beautifully as ever. A slightly shorter straight one didn’t bounce much and thumped the pads of the number 3. A huge shout and Mickey was into the action. The number 4 was a very jolly chap and having replaced Chris at the top end, Goughie persuaded him to sweep. The resulting top edge snaffled by the author at first slip. Good works by the Chairman, Pete Drury behind the stumps and the excellent Gough made it difficult to score and wickets fell regularly. By way of entertainment, we had a spot of ornithology as we all tried to see the little owl. Alex wandering around like the absent Mr. Goodwyn trying to get a good view. Charles set his field by reference to the fairy rings on the ground. Towards the end, the Chorleywood skipper managed a few lusty blows and they finished well scoring 160 – 9 in 53 overs. Worth noting they had two young lads (aged 14) and they batted very well at the end. Gough with a well earned Michelle.
We had the pavilion to ourselves at tea as the firsts had not batted very well and were back out in the field already. With Alex very keen to be out in the middle before the opposition, we had the strange sight of one umpire, two batsmen and very few fielders standing waiting for battle to recommence. Their skipper ambled on last looking very shambolic with his boots undone and shirt flapping so maybe Charles has found a soulmate.
The opening pair of Hardwicke and Buckley worked their way through to a fifty partnership before Alex succumbed lbw. Steve Wale next up started well before a bit of a mix up saw him run out. (Authors note...sorry Steve!)
With the run rate hovering around 3 an over, the result was always likely to prefer a Berkhamsted victory but when Puds was lbw to one that kept rather low, there was an air of tension. The chairman strolled in and having smote some early deliveries to the boundary then became somewhat becalmed. He swished and swished like a man with an insect problem but the young 14 year old leggy was a bit too good. With Julian in grave danger of pulling a muscle trying to put the ball in the next county, Buckley continued to nurdle the ball around and the run rate was maintained. With seven overs to go we passed the required score and secured the points. The result means that we are now third with 2 games to go and expectation is high.
The fines committee sat in session afterwards and we had the sight of a £20 note so the curry on the 16th October will be well funded. All please note the date.
