Northwood III v Berkhamsted Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 31 Jul 2010 at 13:00
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets
Match report
Experience sees the 3rds home
We assembled at Durrants on another lovely dry day for cricket. If it were not for Will Clayton, the average age of the team would have been just south of 50. Due to unavailabilities, the team had an unfamiliar shape to it. Could the grey haired 11 carry on the winning momentum and our push for promotion? Charlie reported that this will be the last time we play here at the OMT ground before the bull dozers move in and erect mass housing – shame,.
The OMT ground had taken some rain over night and had a bit of moss/dampness in the pitch. Charlie sensibly lost the toss and the oppo elected to bat. On a track with the ball sticking in the pitch or popping, Ian Merrett and Will Clayton bowled beautifully. They put up with a strong cross wind and restricted the openers to a mere 34 from the first 13. This pressure and tight bowling paid off when they then both picked up a wicket each – 34 for 2. Numbers 2 and 4 then put on 90 for the next wicket. Goughie had come on and was swiftly dispatched of quite a lot in his opening over as he struggled to find his line and length in the wind. Goodwyn suffered the same fate, going for 13, with Charlie ruthlessly taking him off after only one over. The skipper was proven correct as sense was restored with Mark Lewarne replacing Goodwyn and bowling beautifully – well 5 of the 6 balls per over were always spot on! Will then put in a shout for catch of the season when the ball was hit over Will’s head. With Micky shouting from behind the stumps “bad luck” as the ball appeared to be sailing over 6’4” Will’s head, Will to stretch his elasticated arm and plucked the cherry from the air. Mark then picked up another wicket - a sharp caught and bowled to remove their dangerous no. 4. 128 for 4. Goodwyn then returned in the final overs to bowl a ‘liquorice allsorts’ of slow China-men and quicker off cutters/Yorkers. Goughie too had found his rhythm and we were able to restrict the batters well in the last 15 overs at which point the oppo declared at 204 for 6 off 53, the last 15 overs going at around 3.5 an over. All in all, a good display from bowlers and fielders, even if we lacked a cutting edge. Special mention for their fielding to El Presidento (save for his non-save for 4 – good for the fines pot though), Pete, Mark, Will and Micky from behind the timbers.
Toddy and Peter opened. With Toddy going early and Goodwyn following, the pressure was on. Puds entered the fray and ably supported by Pete, they took us from 6 for 2 to 64 for 3, Pete making a very solid 28. El Presidento, helmet glistering in the sun, came in at 5. The ball starts flying around as both Puds and Julian played some sumptuous shots all round the park, with one over going for 3 sixes and a 4 from Julian. With the two at the crease, the run rate went up, the required rate went down to around 4.5 an over. Puds was finally out, playing on for a fantastic 75. Julian then followed for an excellent 64. It was then left to Mark and Charlie to knock off the remaining 25 runs in the final 4 overs. Charlie and Mark were getting thirsty, so mighty smites from the skipper and a lovely four from Mark, and we were home – 208 for 5 off 45.4.
So – to answer whether the grey haired 11 could carry on the winning momentum and our push for promotion – the answer was a resounding ‘yes’.
