Berkhamsted Cricket Club 3rd XI v Sandridge II on Sat 03 Jul 2010 at 13:00
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won by 10 wickets
Match report
At last, we were permitted to play on the main square. No more trudging beyond the tree line to toss up but a mere amble from the deck to the wicket. On a beautiful day for cricket, our opposition were occupying a lowly league position and expectation was high. We were eager with anticipation as the clock passed 12.20, the time of the meet. At 12.45 Ed wandered in and the poor lad was most confused as he then made a navigational error and went to the wrong changing room. His blackberry was broken and with it, one assumes the sat nav was also a bit out. Charles shuffles off and tosses up. He comes back having lost the first toss of the season to announce that the opposition have decided to bat. Good news as we fancy our chances with a new ball on a very hard and bouncy wicket. All credit to the groundsman as it really did look like a wonderful batting track. Despite that there must be a bit in it early on and the bowlers were straining at the leash.
When the skipper had eventually remembered the balls, we were off.
A gentle start and then Bart produces a beauty to get the opener to play on. Shortly after, Ian gets the number 3 to drive straight to Goughie. The smell of blood was in the air. The boys sensed an early finish was available and Alex and Ed were delighting in the prospect of a game of cricket, a few beers and then an on time arrival at the ball. Cinders would not be late for this one assuming the plan worked. And so it seemed as the Smith and Merrett show worked their way through the first seven.
The opener battled on and with zero support from the other end, he kept the Sandridge boat afloat. At 88 for 8 we felt that tea could be early. Greg certainly thought so as he made a few attempts to crash the party to establish what time the tea bags should be immersed.
The time in the field was most enjoyable as we were on top and the boys had some superb entertainment. First Ed tried to split Alex’s skull with a throw from cover point. Thank goodness Alex keeps his hair short. Having Ed at cover is like having an exuberant Labrador. Bolly was then responsible for a moment of pure comedy. Following an instruction from the skipper he scampered off after a square drive and produced a delightful stop. At that moment we were all impressed. 10 seconds later, it was a Whitehall farce as having gathered the ball, he then nearly threw it over the fence for four. The fines pot prospered.
As we contemplated a cuppa, Ezzie was then introduced. We all thought it would be good and so did the Sandridge no. 10. Ezzie was plundered. He was still chuntering at 8.30 pm. but the No.10 hit him all over Hertfordshire.
Goughie having listened to guidance from the slip cordon started to produce some loop and suddenly it was all over. Credit to Romit who bowled really well for no reward.
We enjoyed tea and Alex and Mark strolled out to see what would be produced. Not a lot. The ball whistled this way and that and after 21 overs we had 141 for no wicket. 30 points and frankly a bit of a nonsense. Sandridge will have a few long days if they can’t get a bit more but we were happy with the outcome. Shortly afterwards we were treated to the lovestruck skipper engaging in a few sprints with a 5 year old. Needless to say the 5 year old won comfortably. Goughie’s daughter paraded the new haircut.....very chic although we did wonder where the team mascot had gone. Apparently two weeks in Barbados whilst Goughie and Jo manage 6 days in France. His devotion to cricket is admirable.
