Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won by 25 runs

Match report "The sum of the parts is worth more than the whole"

The 3rds headed off in the sun shine to Watford. Even Merrett could not make them late, on FA Cup Final day. Charlie duly lost the toss and we were inserted. The first hour saw the pitch misbehave with erratic bounce. In these conditions, and with West Herts bowling well, with some zip, it soon became clear that the front foot was the only way to go. Our openers took the worst of the pitch, batting well in tricky conditions, Burgess and Aitchison seeing off the early overs. Puds then took the attack to West Herts with some elegant drives, two wonderful sixes before the pitch got him too. We were 70 for 4 which in the conditions, was about par. Buckley, having taken 10 overs to get off the mark, then found his range. The pitch then flatten out and the hard work of the early men paid off with Buckley and Goodwyn sharing a 100 run stand. The quick singles, whilst almost killing the two batsmen, started to upset the opposition and the West Herts bowlers started to press a little too much - the runs started to flow. Buckley holed out for an excellent 48 searching for quick runs, and Hussey, Merrett, Furlong and Patel all fell for the team cause also in search of quick runs. With Goodwyn's wicket the last, we had 197, 3 short of the 200 for maximum runs bonus with an over to spare.

After tea without tea (?!) Ezard and Merrett opened the bowling. The pitch offered very little but they kept the ball up and the wickets soon fell, with Ezard causing the batsmen trouble even without any assistance from the pitch. Some shrewd captaincy from the Hussey saw their number two (who looked very useful) induced to play across a straight one from Ezard, aiming for a gap Charlie had left and lost his stumps. Patel came on and bowled tightly - taking a wicket and two neat catches. A good run out, finished off by Burgess' sharp keeping pegged West Herts back. With continued tight bowling, more sharp fielding and with Ezard causing their batsmen untold trouble, we had them on the run. To their credit West Herts kept trying to win the game and to cap a fine team effort, Buckley sprinted across the boundary to snaffle what may have been a flat batted six on the boundary off the impressive Merrett. The catch summed up an excellent team effort, with the ever-green Ezard finishing with 5 for 49.
