Abbots Langley III v Berkhamsted Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 01 May 2010 at 13:00
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won by 10 wickets
Match report
New season, new oppos, new grounds - same bunch of cricketing die-hards - Charlie still not having found his razor.
As we turned up to the ground of Abbotts Langley, the best that could be send of the playing conditions was that the sun was out. To be fair, the strip was fine, but the out field was just that - a field. Charlie tossed and we fielded first. What a start - 0 for 2 with Bartho and Ian Merrett claiming an opener each. An early contender for champagne moment was Burgess' magnificent catch off Merrett of their no.2. The ball was thrashed off a thick edge high and wide, for all probability a four to backward point - but for Burgess' left hand thrust high to his left at full stretch. Who needs fielding practice.
And so it continued with two smart catches in the slips by Puds. Even Charlie got into the act with two wickets coming directly from his field changes. But as Buckley said in this election week "things could only get [worse]" - they had to - but to be fair, only marginally. But for some rusty catching, we would have had them all out for less than the 74 they mustered. Mention just go to Antonelli for some terrific out fielding as well as young O'Neill for a typically electrifying leg-side stumping to finish the oppo. off.
As tea was not ready, Burgess and Hardwicke were sent straight out to reply. Tea was only just about ready when they come back in, having knocked off the 75 required in just 12.3 overs. Hardwicke timing the ball as if he had been netting all winter, notched up an impressive 51 not out; Burgess rounding off an all round performance with bat and in the field with 22 not out.
Brownie points secured for all those who were able to return to their families early, tea was taken - which was well worth the wait, I should add.
