Tring Park v Berkhamsted Cricket Club Under 10 Blue on Tue 18 May 2010 at 6pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won BCC won by 16 runs
Match report
Many thanks to Tring for agreeing to a delayed start and thus allowing many of the side to play in what was expected to be (and indeed was) a close battle with our local rivals.
Having lost the toss BCC were put into bat and immediately were under pressure losing two cheap wickets in the first over. However Hawksworth made amends for his earlier error hitting 3 successive boundaries in the third over to steady the ship and kick-start the scorecard into life. However the momentum swung back to Tring with some tight bowling by their second pair and along with 3 further wickets BCC found themselves at 220-5 at the midpoint of the innings. Hadden and Munday then inched the total forward, putting on 18 without loss before a crazy call led to the final pair of Nel and Ormerod running themselves out on the first ball they faced! They put that behind them though and put on a further 20 with the loss of just one more wicket, with Ormerod playing the two best shots of the day (and I suspect of his career), two perfect straight drives back past the bowler for four. A final cheeky single left Tring needing 260 to win.
Knowing Tring have always done well with the bat, it was important that BCC bowled a good line and length (something of a strength in recent weeks) and that they maintained their discipline in the field. A sharp run-out opportunity was snapped up second ball into the Tring innings but some wayward bowling saw BCC punished and yet they stayed in touch with a second wicket courtesy of Hawksworth. It was then that the tide began to turn in BCC’s favour. Clarke and Ormerod produced 4 very tidy overs with both picking up 2 wickets each (Ormerod finishing his spell with a wicket maiden!). Tring were now on the back foot at just 209-6 but BCC then proceeded to let them back into the game with 4 very poor overs conceding 22 extras and allowing Tring to get to within 23 runs of their target at 237. With Tring’s last pair well known for their big hitting, BCC had to bowl accurately if they were to clinch the win. Hadden opened his spell with his pacey good length and was unlucky not to pick up a wicket, seeing a dropped catch go down at mid-on. However Hawksworth snatched a superb C&B effort in the following over to keep the game on a knife edge. Hadden’s second over proved to be decisive, keeping their strongest batsmen pegged in the crease with a combination of great bowling and some athletic fielding in the covers by O’Gorman. Needing 17 to win off the last over, Clarke stepped up again and delivered another solid over, restricting Tring to just 5 runs and taking a wicket with the final ball of the day and leaving them at 243-8. Phew!
