Kings Langley v Berkhamsted Cricket Club Under 9 Red on Tue 15 Jun 2010 at 6pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won BCC won by 12 runs
Match report
Suitably in World Cup month, this was a game of 2 Halves, as they say.....
Phew! I think it is fair to say that our boys dug themselves out of a terrible situation last night, during a top of the table clash with our closest rivals for that all important Finals Day place! Lovely evening, gracious hosts and a strong line up seemed to auger well for another fine BCC performance, but the KL bowlers and (certainly) their fielders had other ideas.
Captain for the day Nathan won the toss for Berko' (for the first time this season!) and we elected to bat - which was certainly the right decision. However what followed was a testament to some excellent performances from the KL team. Openers Joe D and Tom L manfully tried to keep some fast bowling out and Charlie and James were unable to dominate as they have against most teams this season, With young Bill Meacock making his debut alongside his brother Tom the ship was steadied a little with some fine running between the wickets in a solid partnership, which certainly suggests these brothers will be great players. Tom struck a glorious 4 and Bill seemed to steal quick singles all over the field.
By the time Alfie and Nathan strode to the wicket we were hopeful of maybe reaching 240 - which we almost did as Alfie hit a great 4 off the last ball of the innings. Nathan demonstrated once again his strong batting skills and great speed between the wickets too. So, 238 for 5 was the final score - our lowest to date against our keenest opposition....
A Churchillian team talk from Mike Mann sent the lads out to field with some clear objectives and the boys surpassed themselves! A fantastic all round display (punctuated with great wickets from Charlie & superb bowling at the death from Alfie and James) kept the run rate down. Nathan set the scene with tremendously accurate overs at the start and Tom M came in and got a great 'caught and bowled'. Meanwhile Alfie and then Nathan kept wicket brilliantly and James immediately got into a good line and length (much to Bryan's delight!).
Joe and Tom L followed up their solid batting display with excellent fielding and tight bowling. Bill seemed to defy the laws of physics by appearing to be in two places at once on a number of occasions and saved us many runs in the covers. This was great defence.
Incredibly, we restricted KL to a total of 226 for 7,..... but make no mistake, this was close, very close, very, very close.....As coaches, Bryan, Mike and I were extremely proud of the boys last night!
Congratulations Berkhamsted and thanks for the game Kings Langley.
