Sawbridgeworth v Berkhamsted Cricket Club Under 11 A on Sun 19 Jul 2009 at 11am
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Lost by 7 wickets

Match report The U11s league season finished in disappointment after they were beaten by Sawbridgeworth in the semi finals of the Herts U11 competition at Knebworth. The team were hopeful of going one better than last year - when they lost narrowly to Shenley in the final - but it wasn't to be and, in the end, we were beaten by the better team on the day.

Put into bat, the boys set off in some style with Jack Filer cracking two great fours in the first over. But the atmosphere changed when first Jack was run out and then Charlie Lupton was bowled by a wicked ball that kept low. Two more quick wickets fell and we were in big trouble at 28 for 4 after 6 overs. With the pressure well and truly cranked up, George Lewarne (17) and Oli Holdroyd (8) played sensibly for 6 overs and pushed the score along to 70 before both were out in quick succession. Harry Ormerod (7) kept the scoreboard ticking over but was out just when he looked to be getting on top of the bowling. Chris Lovett (4 not out) batted doggedly for the final four overs, allowing Ben Miles (12 not out) to cut loose at the other end with a couple of lovely boundaries. That partnership of 18 brought the score to 99 for 7 - a respectable total, but sadly not enough. The Sawbrigeworth openers rarely looked troubled, and a combination of loose bowling and excellent batting saw them reach 45 without loss approaching the halfway stage. Things got harder still when the rain came down, making bowling and fielding very difficult, but the boys' heads didn't drop and Jamie Slater came up with a fine delivery to remove one of the Sawbridgeworth openers LBW. When Harvey Lewis bowled their number three batsman, Berko sensed they might be in with a sniff of a chance. But despite a smart run out from Charlie Lupton, the win was never really on, and Sawbridgeworth deservedly got home with more than two overs to spare.

With the rain threatening again, the third place play off against Shenley (who had lost to Radlett in the semis) was cancelled and replaced with a 'bowl off' - cricket's version of a penalty shoot-out. With a sizable crowd just a few feet away, the pressure was really on for both sets of bowlers, but it was Berko who managed to hold their nerve; Harry Ormerod and Harvey Lewis both hitting the stumps to give us the win and ensure that the day finished on a high.

Overall, it's been another good season for the U11s - they've played some really entertaining cricket, in the right spirit and if we can keep it up, a trophy can't be far away!

For the record, Sawbridgeworth went on to beat Radlett by 5 runs in the final.
