Berkhamsted Cricket Club 5th XI v Cheam on Sat 11 Jul 2009 at 1:00
Match was Drawn
Match report
A largely youthful 5th XI gained a very creditable draw in their first outing of the season, against a strong Cheam side.
Cheam elected to bat first and early wickets for Oliver Hopkins from afine catch by Charlie Benson, Alex Hubbard and Joseph Atkins soon had the visitors struggling at 38-3. However, a fine stand from Fernando and Ovens, aided by some debatable umpiring started to take the game away from the home side. Berkhamsted came back strongly at the end with deserved wickets for Derek Pratt and James Chambers.
Perhaps not surprisingly Berkhamsted struggled when we went into bat. Accurate bowling, the lack of match practice amongst the top order and the relative inexperience of some of the team leaving us precariously placed at 51-7 at the half way stage. Joseph Atkins then proceeded to play an innings of immense style, maturity and skill which defied his tender years. With 8 overs still to play, last man James Chambers joined Joseph at the crease. The two showed great technique and courage to see out the remaining overs with fielders crowding them and with the light fading rapidly.
An exciting and enjoyable finish to the debut match at Cow Roast, and deserved erward for the team's efforts.
