Reed III v Berkhamsted Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 25 Jul 2009 at 1:30
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won by 8 wickets

Match report A long drive to Buntingford to a pleasant school ground with a wet grassy pitch very popular with the local rabbits. Tim Buckley was standing in for Charlie who was sunning his taut body on far flung beach in “My Yorker.” Heads were called, the toss lost but they elected to bat for reasons best known to them. Ian Merrett and Bart Smith opened the bowling. The first opener was out in Ian’s second over with a good catch palmed up by Mark Burgess at silly mid on and snaffled on the third attempt. Barty had the number three caught by keeper Alex Hardwicke in the next over – a long pause before the finger as the batsmen didn’t want to walk and his mate didn’t want to give him out. Ian came back and took out the centre stump of the number four with what can be politely called Ian’s “Full Yorker.” Bart volleyed back with the ball just kissing the off stump with the other opener bowled not playing a shot. Undaunted Ian took a caught and bowled. Barty served another beauty bowling their number 7. Then he had their 8 caught silly mid on by Goughie to take a 4-3 lead and the score after 12 overs an almost unbelievable 24 for 7. Top work. Mikey Antonelli and Goughie were left discussing the best rides at Alton Towers – not surprising for spin bowlers “Air” apparently.

Their left handed number 6 started playing some strokes and Goughie came on to replace Ian. Barty had their number 9 caught by Alex to get a very well deserved 5 for. Goughie got smacked for 3 sixes in one over tossing them up to their number 10. Good shots using his feet driving through the line - really. Unperturbed and unreplaced Goughie came back and had his revenge bowling the number 6 and then the number 10. All out for 74 in 22.1 overs. Tim commented he would have preferred they got 20 less ie Goughie had not have bowled his third over although to be fair the second six was tipped over the boundary by the stand in skipper at long off.

As it was only 3 o’clock we didn’t take tea. Alex and Simon Brennan opened the batting. Simon was bowled on a no-ball and then in the third over went back and played across the line to a short one that didn’t bounce. Will Burgess helped Alex smacking a few around falling in the 14th over for 10 with the score on 46. Ollie Burgess took over and carried his bat to the end for a good 20. Alex again entranced us with some more sublime stroke play to end on 40 not out. The runs knocked off in 21 overs, 30 points to us and a paltry 2 to Reed – cue the double reeded oboe dirge.

Tea was then taken and everyone had a chance to head off early. While reflecting on his role as captain Tim could not help musing “Ce n’est pas très difficile!” We are still second in the league with a big game against the league leaders Pirton next week.
