Potters Bar V v Berkhamsted Cricket Club 4th XI on Sat 16 Jun 2012 at 1pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won Potters Bar defaulted

Match report The one that got away. There are probably more pleasant places to play cricket than under the M25 with a gale blowing but we travelled to Potters Bar hoping to get our second win of the season. Mark lost the toss and we were sent out to bowl, their openers tempting us with quick singles, direct hits would have sent both packing but we needed Jacob to make the breakthrough bowling their opener round his legs for what turned out to be the highest score of the match. After that we ran through their batsmen with ease on a stodgy pitch, Jack bowling a remarkable spell which seemed to consist entirely of wides or wickets. James Chambers returned to the fray with a very accurate spell and Rob Prunty grabbed 3 victims including an athletic one handed C&B. James Lagdon kept immaculately, no byes and 2 catches. Job done 75 all out however we still had to get the runs.

We postponed tea in the hope of a quick victory but after 7 overs we were in tatters at 12 for 4, the victim of some poor shots, dreadful running between the wickets and even worse umpiring. Rob tried to hit us out of trouble and made a quickfire and entertaining 23 but wickets continued to tumble with any ball remotely near the pads being met with deafening appeals to the trigger happy ump. James C middled one onto his pads but was still sent on his way and soon it was left to the last pair - the heroes of Northwood Jacob and Hamish. Slowly they inched towards victory until Hamish took a huge stride down the pitch, the ball hit him on the boot and the umpire had his finger up quicker than Billy the Kid in a shootout and then had the audacity to say it had hit him on the back leg. Not even the bizarre sight of Russell Grant serving the teas could cheer up the Berko boys and we trudged off solemnly thinking about what might have been.

*** UPDATE ON 25/06/12: Since this game was played it transpired that Potters Bar had conceded their 4th XI game and played us in this fixture, which is against league rules. We were thus awarded the win (30 points). Does a lot for relieving that feeling of disappointment after the game! ***
