Stevenage v Berkhamsted Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 18 Jul 2020 at 12pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Lost By 23 Runs
Match report
Having beaten Northchurch last week in a pre-season friendly, Berkhamsted’s league season
got off to a bad start with a 23 run defeat at Stevenage.
On a sunny day Stevenage won the toss and elected to bat on a flat wicket. The league’s
new Covid format of 45 overs per team got underway with new Player/Coach James Bell and
stalwart Adam Scotcher taking the new ball. Both found good carry early on and
occasionally threatened the outside edge. Bell removed Stevenage captain Hayward lbw
with a “nip backer” before young left arm spinner Nate Cunnold trapped Tyler when a slider
went straight on. When Bell added Goodchild to his tally Stevenage were 61/3 in the 18th
over.
Berkhamsted looked to have the upper hand but Jason Chapman had other ideas hitting 72
off 98 balls, helped by being dropped in the 50’s. Moses Anil provided excellent support to
Chapman from number 7, being particularly innovative against the seamers. Anil’s 60
coming off just 49 balls. Bell was denied his 3/fer when the square leg umpire erred in
turning down a stumping appeal from ‘keeper Mark Costin at the death, before Stevenage
closed their innings on 228/7. Bell (2/33) and the off spin of Alan Gofton (2/28) were the
pick of the bowlers, with Jack Hunter, Nate Cunnold and Lewis Lavin, on debut, taking one
apiece.
In reply Berkhamsted’s promising start, amongst some improved running, from top three
Gofton, Cunnold and Ian Bartholomew was cut short when Cunnold was trapped in front
and Gofton was followed by captain Luke Frey in having their furniture rearranged.
Bartholomew was joined by wicket keeper and former Stevenage player Mark Costin.
Briefly the two of them counter attacked with Costin hitting 28 from 24 balls before
inexplicably taking on the “100m” boundary and being caught at deep mid wicket. Number
6 Scotcher arrived at the crease and duly went about upsetting Stevenage with both his bat
and his mouth. Scotcher was particularly clinical of anything short and wide from the
Stevenage bowlers cutting multiple boundaries. A poor bit of running between the wickets
cost Bartholomew his wicket and with that it appeared the game was slipping away from
Berkhamsted’s grasp. Scotcher eventually fell for 36 off 40 balls playing one cut too many
against the spin of Anil who finished with 2/42. With their last recognised batsman gone
Berkhamsted needed something from their tail and they very nearly got it. Coach Bell
determined to drag his new charges over the line from number 10 hit 32 from 32 including a
6 over extra cover, eventually ran out of partners when Jack Hunter skied an attempted
drive back over the bowlers head to leave Berkhamsted 23 runs short. A few of the
Berkhamsted players will look at themselves and find areas for simple improvements, but
the bottom line is the batters did not score enough runs. 228 was very chase-able and the
new captain and coach combination of Frey and Bell will be disappointed that they could
not manage it.
