Rickmansworth IV v Berkhamsted Cricket Club 4th XI on Sat 15 Jun 2019 at 1pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won by 7 wickets

Match report Basically, a run of the mill, par for the course, typical 4s game. We arrived at Rickmansworth to find light rain falling but the pitch playable. Mark promptly lost the toss and their skipper decided to have a bat. OC and Mark opened up and it wasn’t long before we suffered our first casualty, Matt swooping (or should we say collapsing) on a ball in the gully only to dislocate his finger and launch into several expletives until Doctor Dudley stepped into pull the finger back into its correct position. Matt slouched off for a few overs of icing. Mark then caught and bowled their skipper and then took another catch at midwicket off Ollie and we were off to a good start. Matt came back on and literally one ball later a ball was knocked into the covers, Peter Drury dived and bounced up screaming in pain, holding his finger. “very funny” we all thought believing it to be a piss-take only for Doctor D to step in again with a bit of emergency surgery on the dislocated digit. Peter slouched off for a few overs of icing.

In between these moments of carnage police helicopters were swooping above the ground and landing in a nearby field – at one point we thought we heard gunshots – ah well, there was a game to be won.
Ross Lambert came on – his first ball beat the bat and the oppo batter complained about the extravagant turn – “I wasn’t expecting him to actually spin it” – not an unreasonable opinion after 6 overs of OC. Ross picked up 2 wickets and with Pete Dudley, Tom Hewitt and Sue Benson all bowling well we were keeping control of the match. After taking a good catch Steve Potts became our third casualty with a very bad calf strain which effectively ended his match. Then a large tree fell over, it chucked it down and we went off for an early tea. We came back to finish their innings and we picked up 3 more wickets but a few lusty blows from their batters took them to 156.

Mark had to quickly rejig the batting order with 3 injured batters and sent Niloy out to partner the reliable Doctor D. We didn’t need to do much to get off to a good start as the oppo bizarrely opened with a leggie who couldn’t land it on the strip. In no time we were up to 30 off 4 overs. Niloy was run out and then Matt came in and decided to attack through the pain hitting 6 boundaries in a belligerent 39 which took the game away from the opposition. Peter also played well for his 38 and Ross came in to finish things off with 5 overs to spare. In all Rickmansworth bowled 25 wides and no balls and the game might have been a lot closer but for that.
A very satisfying 30 points in adversity which lifts us away from the bottom of the division. Plea from the skipper "come back Peps all is forgiven"
