Berkhamsted Cricket Club Under 12B v Langleybury on Thu 30 Jun 2016 at 6pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won 6 Wickets
Match report
Pouring rain greeted us at the start of this critical league game on the main square at Berko and the boundary had to be adjusted to accommodate the site of the pond which had been present for most of the past week. Nevertheless the boys were in great spirits looking to bounce back from an agonising defeat to Tring last time out and hungry for revenge for the hiding they received at the hands of Langlebury in the reverse fixture.
As the rain eased, Langlebury won the toss and chose to bat. The boys got to work immediately with Pemberton and Stanford taking early wickets and the whole team putting pressure on the Langlebury top order with some excellent fielding. This brought its own reward with the run out of one of Langleburys danger men after sharp work by keeper Longbottom. The oppo were reduced to 16/4 but credit to two of their lads who showed spirit and with clean hitting put together a partnership of nearly 50. However, the retirement of this pair brought renewed energy in the field and the remaining batsmen were dispatched relatively cheaply with captain Hubbard taking 2 wickets, Ben Oldham one and another excellent run out from Longobttom. Fielding was really excellent and I don't recall any fumbles that cost runs, a single bye for wk Longbottom and particular mentions for Nangle and Lound who stopped several certain boundaries when the Langlebury pair were in full flow. We eventually bowled them out for 101 off the first ball of the last over, a great achievement against a quality side.
The end of the first innings was met by another rain shower but mercifully it was brief and we were soon out in the middle chasing. Langlebury started well with some tight bowling but Ben and brother Harry Oldham soon put them to the sword with some savage hitting that got us ahead of the run rate before falling to ambitious shots and running respectively. Oliver Todd came in and once again anchored the innings with patience and skill along with Joe Hubbard but some excellent bowling recovered the situation for Langlebury leaving us with 19 to get off the last 12 balls and only having hit 1 boundary in the previous 6 overs. Excellent running got us 6 in the penultimate over leaving 13 from the last but cometh the hour cometh the captain and Hubbard proceeded to smash 16 of the first 4 balls of the last over including a glorious 6 to finish off the game! We did it and keep alive hopes of another quarter final.
This really was a terrific game of cricket and another fantastic team effort to beat last years county runners up. Pleasingly, the spirit of the team was again praised by the opposition manager again with Ben Oldham in particular indicating a boundary fielding at long on when asked.
Onto the last league game next week and look forward with confidence to rounding things off in style at Lev Green.
MOM: Joe Hubbard for all round performance leading from the front
Moment of match: James Nangle for saving many runs with rock solid fielding
