West Herts V v Berkhamsted Cricket Club 4th XI on Sat 06 Aug 2016 at 1pm - 80 overs (42/38)
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won by 11 runs
Match report
on an almost perfect summers day we travelled to Queens School for a game against west herts 5s. Once Mark had tracked down their skipper we discovered that they only had 9 players due to a number of their players attending a funeral. Mark lost the toss and somewhat surprisingly we were asked to bat. Our batters were ready at 1pm, opposition got on the pitch about 120pm. Frustrating. Even worse, we got off to a terrible start with both openers gone for 2 on a totally lifeless pitch where timing the ball was very difficult. Tim and Mark Burgess did well to stabilise the innings until Mark was bowled for 22. Tim soldiered on through a series of partners who fell by the wayside until he too was caught leaving the tail enders to nudge us up to 114 off our 42 overs, a pretty painful innings but at least we had set a target.
After a really good tea we opened with Finn and OC - their batters looked comfortable until OC suddenly found his length and clean bowled 3 batters. Dan also chipped in with a wicket, Hugo made a smart run out, Jake got his customary couple, one from a superb catch from Jack and suddenly we needed 1 wicket with the opposition not even on 50. For some strange reason West Herts best player came in last and joining their skipper they launched a counter-attack hitting sixes and 4s and when we dropped 2 catches in quick succession we started to become concerned that the game was slipping away. With only 12 needed to win OC came back to grab the vital wicket much to the relief of us all.
With West Herts 4s also losing we still have an outside chance of promotion if we can win our final 4 games of the season with next weeks game vital.
