Berkhamsted Cricket Club 2nd XI v Hertford IV on Sat 28 May 2016 at 1pm - limited overs (50)
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won By 7 Wickets

Match report Berkhamsted 2nd XI returned quite literally to the scene of last weekend’s victorious clash at HQ, dubbed ‘The Battle of the Bog’. Fearing the worst after decimating both popping creases on our assigned pitch the team were astounded to find an immaculate strip for which to ply our trade on, credit and thanks must go to Pudds for his tireless efforts to repair and produce such a wicket.

After another energy sapping warm up in the near 30 degree heat, the skipper continued his good fortune by winning yet another toss and inserting our unfortunate guests Hertford to face the most potent attack in Herts Division Eight A. Dan ‘Cry me a River’ Lake wiped away the tears and out we went….The Hertford openers, seemingly playing for some form of divine intervention went about their business in sedate fashion, scoring at a fraction under 2 an over in the first 15 overs, thrilling stuff. This in part was due to the accuracy of Roberts & Gribbin and the assiduous fielding of the inner ring. Gribbin, determined to prove a point after being accused of ‘Putting on a few Pounds’ over the winter break returned with figures of 3-17, the standout wicket being the statuesque catch from Brownie at short gully that had the rest of the field looking to the boundary so hard was it struck. Wright was his typical unlucky self, on another day would have returned a hatful but alas those catches keep going down off his bowling, a good man makes his own luck! With runs stalling in the Hertford innings at 60-4 the tandem bowling of Henderson & Mason reduced progress even further. Henderson picked up a wicket with his first ball and with Mason literally hooping it in both directions, they didn’t stand a chance. The skipper finished with handsome figures of 5-27 after cleaning up 9, 10 & 11, keeping the visitors to under 100, inspiring stuff.

Debonnaire faced with the task of getting the job done by 5pm went about his business in typical fashion, dropped on ball one, caught on ball two. ‘You live by the sword you die by the sword’. Lewarne & Frey kept up the positive batting both punishing some wayward bowling, Lewarne falling going for one shot too many for 37. Smith came and went, his time in the middle actually doubled by the slow death he was given by our umpire, fines were dished out accordingly. Brownie was keen to get the job done and did so in stunning fashion dispatching the ball over deep midwicket for a maximum leaving Frey a few short of a deserved half-century on 43*. Job done. Talk of the invincibles of 2016 may be a tad premature but with results going our way we now sit in our rightful place atop of the division.

Old Elizabethans await next week, nothing other than a win will suffice.
