Berkhamsted Cricket Club 3rd XI v Old Owens III on Sat 03 May 2008 at 1:30
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won by 2 wickets
Match report
Third Eleven return to the Leagues with a win
An exciting finish on the main square saw Berkhamsted pass a demanding Old Owens total of 173 with less than 3 overs to go and only two wickets in hand. Berkhamsted had won the toss and bet everything on a win by putting Old Owens in. An excellent spell from "Oscar" Johnson on his return to cricket after three years set the standard for some tidy bowling with 1 for 36 from 12 overs. Colts Luke O'Dair and Michael Antonelli kept the runs down with a few aboslute beauties to keep the Owens middle order on its toes and were each rewarded with a wicket. Only openener Martin really got going with a 60, though often hitting the ball in the air into gaps to the frustration of Skipper Charlie Hussey. A blinding catch by Toddy took what looked like their best batsman out for 17 and only some loose balls towards the end allowed Old Owens to take their score past the 150 that had looked likely when Ed Goodwyn had them tied down for a long spell. A strong fielding performance was only marred by the pinging of hamstrings among the older members of the team.
Buckley and O'Dair opened up and both went cheaply bringing in Todd who looked in potent form and Dent who didn't. Some classic straight drives from Toddy disappeared over the ropes from a very straight bat, until he deposited one straight down long on's throat for a 46 containing 5 boundaries. Goodwyn accompanied by runner and Johnson hung around long enough for Dent to find his strokes and a series of partnerships pushed the score along at the requisite run rate. When Dent was out for 47, only 30 were needed, but the quick dismissals of Oscar, Hussey and Machon gave cause for concern and Old Owens were back on top. However, some calm batting from James Westley supported ably by Antonelli saw Berko home, a result much enlivenend by the sight of the skipper acting as a runner for the last few overs.
An excellent result, showing the benefit of some determined batting from the older half of the team.
