Berkhamsted Cricket Club Under 15A v Boxmoor on Thu 25 Jun 2015 at 6pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won by 18 runs
Match report
Context: matches this season batting first - played 4, won 4; batting second - played 3, lost 2, won 1 with a six off the last ball of the match, against a team of 9 players including two 12-year-olds.
Charlie won the toss again this evening and after discussion with his analysts, managers, senior players, camp-followers and hangers-on decided to have a bat. But the team was without it's prolific opening batsman, TP, indisposed by an undercooked sausage on a D of E expedition, how would they cope? Well, "cometh the hour cometh the man" as the old saying goes and Josh Todd was the man for this match, opening the batting, making 44, participating in partnerships of 38 with Sam for the first wicket, 64 with Charlie for the second and only losing his wicket in the 18th over of 20. The middle order batsmen, having so little time left when they entered the arena, quite rightly threw the bat and added what proved to be vital extra runs; Dan Brierley, an U14 guesting for the U15s, making 8 not out off the last over and a bit.
Boxmoor, fielding a much stronger side than when we gave them a good gubbing at their place a few weeks ago, started well and after 8 overs were ahead of the required rate but an outstanding spell of spin from Kian (bowling a noticeably fuller length than early in the season) put a stop to that. Kian ended with 2 wickets for 9 runs off his 4 overs. Tom C and Louis also produced maiden-overs at vital times - TC ending with 15-3 off 4, Louis unfortunately getting clattered in his final over to take the shine off a promising spell. The Boxmoor innings lost momentum in the closing overs and they finished 18 short despite a hard-hitting 42 from Shaw.
An excellent performance by the skipper set the tone in the field, ably supported by the very vocal Sam Quinn and top-quality catching from Buckets Godsell and O'G. Good match, good result.
