St Albans IV v Berkhamsted Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 30 Aug 2014 at 1pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won by 108 runs
Match report
Friendly opposition, poor facilities belonging to Verulam school which they obviously were not keeping up properly during the summer holidays. Felt sorry for St Albans trying to make the most of it.
That included the pitch which was pretty awful. It had been rolled heavily and flat before the start and looked good but quickly showed it's true nature with a lot of deliveries shooting through and very slow. Just to add interest, the odd one popped.
Pete won the toss and opted to bat and once the nature of the pitch became clear, Peter and Jamie concentrated on getting on the front foot and surviving. The score crawled along against decent opening bowlers and the opening partnership was broken in the 13th over on 29 with a direct run out from the talented 12 year old Button, who ended up with 3 wickets and 2 run outs. Pete stuck around while a few wickets fell and when he fell too to Button, this time from his bowling, a couple more went and we reached the precarious position of 50-6. Enter Stephen and Matt, who did an excellent job of rebuilding, watching carefully and nudging around. Accelerating towards the end Matt was run out and then Charlie came in to selectively hit well the bad balls as Stephen stepped up, too. Got to 143 with some lusty blows at the death and Stephen left on 45 not out - worth much more on a decent pitch.
Not much to be said about the St Albans reply, Charlie pounded away on line and length while Jack started waywardly, but came good in his 5th-7th overs as the wickets went. Included a fast off-spinner from Jack which turned in to hit the stumps from about 18 inches from outside off stump and the batsmen were just not getting forward to shooting deliveries which did them. Stunning catch in the slips from Tim B and a neat pouch at silly mid on from Jack from a mis-pull showed high quality fielding (no catches dropped of whatever difficulty) and Charlie got his fifth with the tenth wicket in less than 20 overs in total. Great use of a dodgy pitch.
