Berkhamsted Cricket Club Under 13A v Chorleywood on Thu 19 May 2011 at 6 pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won by 37 runs

Match report Despite a patchy performance, Berkhamsted came out on top against a Chorleywood team who were at a numerical disadvantage for the first half an hour of the match.

With several of the visiting players unable to reach the venue on time, the game started twenty minutes late with Chorleywood fielding with only eight players. Openers Mack and Stanford took full advantage, hitting several boundaries in the early overs. But Chorleywood didn't lie down - Clement and Bendall soon picked up the important wickets of Mack and Lewarne to leave Berkhamsted 40-2 after 4 overs. With the visitors up to full strength, Hodson produced a great spell of three overs for just three runs to really put the brakes on the innings. Dan Macey - one of three U12s (and an U10!) in the Berko team - was run out unluckily, failing to ground his bat after some good fielding from the visitors.

With the home side getting bogged down, Oli Holdroyd decided that all out attack was the way forward (not for the first time ..), but having played a classic drive back past the bowler for four, followed by a huge six ten metres over the senior boundary (which cost me £5 …), it was no great surprise when he was bowled by Rogers trying to hit the next ball into Bedfordshire.

Top wicket taker for Chorleywood was Bryant who bowled a good spell, taking 3-14 in 3 overs. There were useful contributions from the other U12s – Duncombe and Holderness – and Harry Ormerod finished 11 not out. Berkhamsted’s top scorer was once again Ted Stanford, who played sensibly and remained focused – something our other batsmen could learn from!

With the sun going down, and the game reduced to 18 overs, Chorleywood began their reply, chasing 117. They were soon in trouble, losing both openers in the first two overs – captain Bryant victim of another bizarre run out - standing outside his crease when a sharp throw from Macey hit the stumps. Hodson scored a very impressive 21, including four boundaries, and there was some gritty resistance form Rogers and Clement, but the Chorleywood batsmen never really managed to get on top of some good bowling from the Berko team. Butler Caddle, Lewis, Macey, Holdroyd and Lewarne picked up a wicket apiece, to leave the visitors 80-9 after 18 overs.

Overall, we bowled and fielded really well and credit goes to the younger boys – including 10 year old Tom Lewis (a last minute call up after an injury to one of the regular players) – who all played their part. With Jack Filer unavailable, both George and Ted did well with the gloves - sharing the wicket keeping duties. Next up, Kings Langley on Tuesday.
