Preston IV v Berkhamsted Cricket Club 5th XI on Sat 28 May 2011 at 1.00pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Lost by 7 wickets
Match report
Saturday saw us travel to Preston, a beautiful ground in a picturesque village - sadly this being the mighty 5ths we had to play at Hitchin Boys School where neither the pitch nor outfield looked like it had seen a groundsman for several years. This was a toss we had to win but Simon called wrong and we were inserted with worrying haste by their skipper who had a trace of an evil smile dancing on his lips. 2 balls in and we knew why, a half tracker shooting straight along the ground. After 2 overs we were 1 for 2 and balls then began to veer up dangerously off a length sending several batters in the pavilion scurrying around after helmets. Joseph and Robert managed somehow to scramble into the teens before holing out and then Mark survived several LBW shouts to make 25 but that was about it in terms of batting contributions as our very young team featuring 8 colts subsided to 90 all out in 33 painful overs in incessant drizzle under slate grey skies.
Typically following an early tea the sun came out and suddenly the pitch started to behave in a less volatile way despite the odd ball still flying into the stratosphere or shooting along the ground. Joseph struck twice to give us a glimmer of hope and James Chambers bowled a really lovely spell in which he took a wicket and then cruelly had the same batsman dropped 3 times in the slips in the same over. The culprit, who will remain nameless, may face a disciplinary from his son over eggs and bacon on sunday morning. The reprieved batsman, sensing it was his day, then smashed a quickfire 42 to seal the game.
The positives - instead of minus 10 points we got plus 3! The author has diaried future Berko fixtures on this ground as "decorating spare bedroom".
