Berkhamsted Cricket Club 2nd XI v Northwood II on Sat 15 May 2010 at 13:00
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won by 3 wickets
Match report
Berkhamsted sweat through tight run chase
Dry week leading up to the match, solid deck, lightening outfield. Tougher to lose the toss, Northwood to bat first. As ever Darren lead the way with tight, accurate bowling restricting the visitors to 2 runs per over for the first 15 overs, despite a very quick outfield and excellent batting conditions. Digger and Hugh Barnett also supported competently, with the young leg spinner unlucky not to get a wicket from another excellent spell. Without too much firepower, Northwood's pick of the lineup was Lewis who steadied an unstable ship with 66 before being caught in the deep by Scotty. The number 4, Kirman, took a leaf from Langley's guide, taking about 40 overs for his 38 not out and this aside, Northwood failed to breach a par 200 score on a good day for batting. Well done to Bart who picked up 4 which included a rifled caught & bowled that Flintoff would have been proud to pouch.
Berkhamsted 171 for victory; sun, batting pitch, Augusta outfield. Steady start from the home team openers posting 40 for the first wicket with Johnny James the unlucky first man down, misjudging one from Patel. About 5 overs later, Sherjan fell being bowled off his pad for 9 forcing Brownie to the crease a little earlier than desired. Captain Tougher continued to blaze anything loose and marched confidently towards a deserved half century. With Brownie's departure, some 7 overs later, came a tightening of the belts and hour of twitchy spectators from the decking. Berkhamsted 97 for 4, still much to do. Tougher's decision to elevate Simsy to 6 proved to be one of a turning point with Tim and Bart sharing a 50 run partnership, keeping up with a 5 an over needed run rate and taking the home side to within an ounce of victory. With Ben Beard clubbing the final boundary for victory in confidence, a relieved Berkhamsted came out on top despite a few tense overs towards the end. Praise to both Digger and Simsy whom without, Berko would not have got over the line and additionally for the Skipper for posting a match winning 50.
