North Mymms IV v Berkhamsted Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 09 May 2009 at 1:30
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Won by 10 wickets
Match report
A dry, sunny day met the 3rds at the Metropolitan Police ground near Bushey.
Charlie called 'heads' and elected to field even though the wicket was hard and flat - more like what you may expect in July not May. All looked good. A fine opening spell from young Antonelli and the not so young Ezzard set the tone for the opposition's innings as they were restricted to scoring at a little over 2 an over by some excellent tight bowling backed up by some solid ground fielding. With young Smith coming on as first change, with a bit a extra zip, the wickets started to fall. Both of Smith's spells were of a high quality and kept the batsmen guessing. If it have not been for North Mymms' opening bat, Lawless, who carried his bat throughout the innings for 63, we may have taken a early tea. As it was, the bowlers kept to a fine tight lines, extracting whatever bounce and pace they could muster from the pitch. Goughie pitched in with some super straight ones, picking up a couple of wickets. Alex Hardwicke, on debut, put all pain from his knee to one side and kept the pressure up. Even when North Mymms tried to accelerate, they continued to be tied down eventually batting the maximum 47overs to post a modest 127 for 5.
In reply, Berkhamsted's openers were clearly thirsty, seeking to get to the bar early. Debutante Hardwicke and Toddy, each caressed the ball to all parts. Any sting in the North Mymms attack was negated in the 3rd and 4th overs with Hardwicke's aggression. Toddy joined in the exhibition and both openers ending up with unbeaten half centuries to take us home in under 20 overs by 10 wickets.
