Old Eastcotians v Berkhamsted Cricket Club 4th XI on Sat 02 Jun 2018 at 1pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Lost by 75 runs

Match report Only the Royals 2nd league match of the season on what turned out to be a very warm afternoon. Our opposition Old Eastcotians had won the league below in the previous year and to be honest are far too good to be in the Regional Divisions. Their pitch in Watford and the outfield are very poor - in fact the home team seem to have developed a tactic of taking the outfield out of the equation all together by hitting lots of sixes! And they are very good at that.

We had a nicely balanced team of old heads and enthusiastic youngsters and our bowling effort was generally good. Jack on debut bowled a great opening spell, picked up 2 wickets and could have had more, Henry bowled their no 3 with a bizarre slow bouncer and when another batter retired hurt we thought we had a whiff of victory - however the next 2 batters played superbly - somehow keeping out balls that alternatively shot along the ground or leapt dangerously off a length - and when we bowled bad balls they went big - very impressive batting and both guys scored 50s. Even after these guys were dismissed the next batters came in and launched huge sixes, poor Henry disappearing for 21 off his last over despite bowling decent straight deliveries.

Overall our bowling and fielding were on the money - a couple of difficult chances went down, skipper Mark took 2 good catches and Pete made a smart stumping. Finn and newboy John both bowled tidy spells but unfortunately our spinners OC and Mark weren't really at the races today and remained wicketless.

Tea was interesting - nice fresh sandwiches, cookies and scorching hot Sri Lankan curry! After tea we set about our daunting target and it was pretty clear after a few overs we weren't going to chase it down as normally good shots went nowhere on the long grass. So we settled for an extended net and the chance to pick up some much needed batting points. Pete batted well until he literally ran out of steam and both Oliver and Ben looked comfortable and played some classy shots - 2 exciting prospects for the future. Later in the innings John scampered a quick 20 with the skipper begging for oxygen until the latter was run out backing up. And that was that really - a comfortable win for the home team but an enjoyable game and a good learning experience for our young team. We remain third from bottom but it feels like our first win is nor far away, Many thanks to Peps for umpiring for most of the game.
