Flamstead II v Berkhamsted Cricket Club 4th XI on Sat 19 May 2018 at 1pm
Berkhamsted Cricket Club Lost by 3 wickets
Match report
Beautiful sunny day coinciding with the Cup Final and the Meghan/Harry shenanigans in Windsor. We arrived at Flamsted with 9 players and 3 of us carrying bad injuries. Still we got a team on the pitch for the first time this season and avoided the dreaded minus 10 penalty. The home team only had 10 players but they had the advantage of a very good bowling attack for this level and a pitch with uneven bounce with many balls keeping very low. After losing Will early doors Jacob and Andy consolidated and at drinks we had progressed to 51, slow going but vital on a tricky deck. Drinks triggered a collapse - trigger being the operative word as our umpires gave 3 LBWs in 3 overs. With only 9 men things were looking bleak until Mark and Steen with the help of quite a few extras put on 50 and we somehow scrambled into 3 figures. Tea was excellent a good mixtures of traditional fayre and fresh fruit - and then we had the problem of fielding with essentially 6 fit players. To be fair we made a game of it and in particular 13 year old Dan on debut bowled an excellent spell and beat the bat on several occasions with no luck. Flamsteds number 3 was a good ball striker and he tonked quite a few fours but then he had to leave early and their innings started to fall apart with Will Currie picking up 4 wickets. It looked like we might pull off a famous victory but a couple of boundaries finished us off.
The abiding memory from this day will be Peter Drury our keeper having to sprint to the deep backward square leg boundary to field the ball as he was the only person within 50 yards not injured and capable of running. Hilarious and the ultimate village moment. Miraculously after 2 concessions and a defeat we are not bottom of the league and hopefully we can get 11 fit players on the pitch next week and begin our ascent up the table! Thanks to the 9 players today that stuck to the task in hand without a single grumble.
